Participating in Snuba Helps Promote Reef Conservation
Snuba International is committed to the protection of the most fragile and endangered ecosystem in the world, our coral reefs. Thousands of acres of coral reefs are destroyed every day. At the present rate of destruction, up to 70% of the world's coral reefs may be destroyed in the next 20-40 years.
Snuba® diving is an activity enjoyed around the world and Snuba International recognizes that the health of our reefs also represents the health of our future business. To further this effort, the company has developed a specific program participated by ALOHA SNUBA Thailand and all the other Snuba Recreation Centers worldwide, called "Reef Alliance". It is our intent to educate our participants about the fragility of our coral reefs, prevent any touching or taking of marine life and to share the appreciation and privilege of exploring our ocean realm.
What is Coral?Coral reefs are the most biologically diverse marine ecosystems on earth, rivaled only by tropical rainforests. Corals grow over long periods of geological time and have existed for over 400 million years.
Did you know? A coral reef is composed of thin plates or layers of calcium carbonate secreted over thousands of years by billions of tiny soft bodied animals called coral polyps. It takes years for some corals to grow an inch and they can range in size from a pinhead to several feet in length. Each polyp excretes a calcerous exoskeleton and lives in a symbiotic relationship with host algae, zooxanthellae, that gives coral its color.
Did you know? Coral reefs occupy less than one quarter of one percent of the earth's marine environment, yet they are home to more than a quarter of all known fish species.
What Harms Coral?Coral reef's are suffering globally - 1/5 of the world's coral reefs have already been destroyed. Scientists report that only 30% of coral reefs are actually healthy. Corals typically grow only in warm tropical waters ideally between 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Although climatic and geological changes affect them, human activities have incurred a substantial amount of damage over the past decade.
Corals are damaged by a variety of physical impacts, including: anchor damage, accidental boat groundings, diver or snorkeler contact, toxic sunscreen, and the dragging of diving equipment. Propellers can also destroy shallow sea grasses.
