Snuba diving - What is SNUBA?Diving in Phuket
What's New - Snuba!
Diving in Thailand is now possible for everyone! The exclusive Snuba dive system allows everyone to explore the underwater world in a safe manner. With over 3.4 million Snuba dives worldwide - there has been ZERO accident claims! Snuba allows families, couples, kids, and anyone who wants to spend more time in the water and less time in a classroom! Everything you want to know about SNUBA®
SNUBA is an acronym that stands for Surface Nexus Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
I know, what is a Nexus??? Nexus basically means a bridge. Therefore Snuba acts as a bridge between the surface and the underwater world. Snuba is also a portmanteau word which combines the words scuba and snorkel.
Snuba divers use similar equipment to that of scuba divers: fins, mask, regulator, and weights. However, the air tank commonly worn on a scuba divers back, is supported in a specially designed, patented, Snuba raft that floats on the surface of the water.
The air that the snuba divers breath travels through a twenty foot (7m) hose, safely allowing the Snuba diver to travel to a maximum depth of twenty feet. Snuba participants breathe through a standard scuba regulator attached to a lightweight harness, which is attached to the air line. While Snuba diving the Snuba raft moves effortlessly with the Snuba divers as they explore the underwater world below. Most people comment that Snuba diving is one of the most amazing things that they have ever done! Many people just don't have the time or the need to spend days in a classroom to try diving. All Snuba divers must go through a thorough 15 minute safety briefing from the Professional Snuba Guide who will get you prepared and excited for you Snuba dive!
Snuba is unique from scuba diving in that divers can easily control their depth by simply holding onto the air hose at whatever depth the Snuba diver feels most comfortable. The maximum depth of twenty feet prevents a Snuba diver from descending to far, or out of control. There is no snorkeling or scuba experience needed for snuba, making it a safe and easy adventure. No extensive training, certifications or license is required to try Snuba. Unlike scuba diving, there is no need for heavy equipment in snuba, the users’ air tanks are supported by the floating Snuba raft. In general, Snuba is a relaxing activity - imagine swimming in an aquarium with the most beautiful fish you've ever seen, except it's real and your in an actual reef. Even those who are not strong swimmers can enjoy Snuba. Snuba is a great way to bring couples, families, and children together while on holiday in Phuket, Thailand; Snuba is a great family activity.
Though Snuba uses compressed air, Snuba participants do not have to worry about decompression issues (the Bends) due to the relative shallow depth. Like a scuba diver you should never hold your breath while under the water and remember to descend and ascend slowly. Slow ascents and descents will allow your ears (and lungs) to pressurize in a similar way to being on an airplane. Slow ascents and descents are incredibly easy and safe due to the unique attachment of the air hose to the Snuba raft. While descending Snuba participants hold on to the Snuba air line and slowly walk their way down the hose while stopping frequently to clear their ears. Your Snuba guide is always there to help assist you during both ascents and descents.
Once the Snuba diver reaches the desired comfortable depth they can either hold on to the line for security or release the line and swim around freely in the beautiful underwater world. Snuba divers wear soft lead weights on a weight belt which makes them neutrally bouyant - think astronauts - allowing the Snuba diver to remain at wahtever depth they feel most comfortable. While snuba users are restricted to a depth of twenty feet, in general, Snuba allows users freedom of movement and full control. When the Snuba tour is over or you would like to return to the surface, you simply take hold of the air hose and walk yourself hand over hand slowly back up to the Snuba raft. Snuba is a proud partner of the Reef Alliance. Snuba reminds you to respect the ocean and the animals you will be in close contact with underwater. Because Snuba brings people much closer to the amazing fish and coral in Phuket's reefs, great care should be taken to avoid touching or accidently stepping on any coral. Take pictures and leave only bubbles! Trust us - You will always remember your first experience breathing air underwater!!!
A Snuba guide will accompany all Snuba divers and assist you in maintaining a safe distance from the coral while pointing out the beautiful fish you will see.
